The Links ‘Jungle’

* Your article regarding the proposal to privatize Anaheim’s two municipal golf courses (Aug. 14) reminded me of “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair, which aimed at the heart of America but instead hit it in the stomach.
Similarly, the main objection to the golf plan is that course maintenance quality might suffer. No one seems to care that the city’s making an additional half million a year would be accomplished by a back-door lowering of the pay of course employees to below poverty level.
Anaheim should not be surprised by the increase in crime and other social problems caused by beating down its loyal employees (and neighborhoods into ghettos). Better, I suppose, for each taxpayer to save a few pennies a year.
That will leave more money for police, prisons and welfare.
