COSTA MESA / NEWPORT BEACH : Schools Eliminate Wagner’s Old Post

The job once held by convicted embezzler Stephen A. Wagner will be eliminated, Newport-Mesa Unified School District officials said this week.
While the position of director of business support services will be dropped, the internal auditor position will be expanded.
“What the internal auditor job is doing is putting increased emphasis on fiscal responsibility,” said district Supt. Mac Bernd, who authorized the change. “We think it is an extremely important issue and will continue to be in the future.”
Wagner pleaded guilty in December to diverting almost $4 million from school coffers into his personal accounts from 1986 to 1992. He was sentenced in June to six years in prison.
The district also eliminated its public information officer, instead making that person a teacher.
The two personnel moves will save the district an estimated at $100,000 a year.
