PLAYA DEL REY : Part of Dockweiler Beach Closed After Sewage Spill

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services closed a portion of Dockweiler State Beach on Friday after 4,500 gallons of raw sewage spilled into a storm drain that empties into the ocean.
The spill, which occurred after a sewer line in Westchester ruptured, was reported about 9 a.m., according to Los Angeles County Lifeguard Capt. Bob Buchanan. Health officials decided to close the beach at 11:15 a.m. as a precaution pending the results of water tests, he said.
The affected beach is a 1 1/2-mile stretch between the north side of Imperial Highway and the foot of Culver Boulevard. Sunbathing is still permitted, Buchanan said.
“It’s a pretty small spill all in all, but (we’re closing the beach) as a preventative action,” said Buchanan, who predicted that the beach would reopen Sunday.
