United Technologies Corp. to Pay Record Fine: Hartford, Conn.-based UTC will pay $5.3 million for illegal waste dumping and other environmental violations at nine Connecticut plants and its research center, settling a federal lawsuit. The company will pay $3.7 million, the largest civil penalty ever imposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, prosecutors said. Another $1.6 million will be paid under federal and Connecticut water pollution laws. UTC products range from jet engines to elevators.
