Tracy Injured, but Still Takes Checkered Flag

Canadian Paul Tracy, overcoming the effects of an injured ankle and a sore neck suffered in a crash two days earlier, drove to an easy victory Sunday in the Texaco-Havoline 200 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis.

Tracy led all 50 laps on the four-mile, 14-turn road circuit, driving his Chevrolet-powered Penske Indy car across the finish line 27.46 seconds ahead of runner-up Nigel Mansell of England.

“The car was just so good that I was able to just try to keep a good, consistent pace,” Tracy said. “Toward the end it was getting pretty tough. My foot was wrapped so tight that it fell asleep.”

Mansell’s run padded his PPG Cup lead to 160-129 over Emerson Fittipaldi, Tracy’s teammate, who finished fifth behind defending series champion Bobby Rahal and Raul Boesel of Brazil.
