Domino’s Delivers a Police Special

Pomona police Officer Robert Devee delivers--both the goods and the bad guys.

The 26-year-old, four-year police veteran went undercover Sunday as a pizza deliveryman, complete with shirt, hat, three large pizzas with everything and a six-pack of Coke.

He ended up helping to arrest three men who allegedly conspired to rob him at gun- and knifepoint.

“It was scary, but kind of fun,” Devee said.

Pomona police were called about midnight by a Domino’s pizza shop manager who had taken an unusually large order from an apartment complex where his drivers had been robbed three or four times over the past month. The caller, he told police, sounded like the same man who called before the other robberies.

Devee volunteered for his first undercover duty--as a pizza deliveryman.

As Devee carried the order into the dark courtyard of the apartment complex, he was confronted by one man with a knife and another with a gun, which turned out to be a BB gun modeled after a .38-caliber pistol.

Devee gave the signal, and other officers swooped in, arresting the pair and a third man hiding in an apartment.

Booked on suspicion of conspiracy to commit armed robbery were Ken Lamar, 18, an unidentified 27-year-old man, and a 17-year-old boy who was not named because of his age.

Police returned the pizzas and soft drinks to Domino’s.
