THE LAST HEH-HEH: MTV is apparently going to have to pay for its success with “Beavis and Butt-Head.” It seems that Laidback Enterprises, a San Francisco-based gifts and novelties firm, registered the name Butthead last year for a character it has marketed on a series of gag items--a man with a head resembling a derriere .
Laidback director of licensing Randy Cox confirms that a settlement is near with the music channel, which began airing the “Beavis and Butt-Head” show earlier this year, though he says that he is not allowed to reveal the amount.
“Without question there has been some confusion on the part of some retailers regarding the two characters,” Cox says.
A spokeswoman for MTV says that the company does not comment on legal matters.
