The cast members range in age from 6 to 16, but this is not child’s play: Over the next 10 days, youngsters in El Segundo and Redondo Beach will stage ambitious musical productions as part of two city drama programs.
Starting tonight, El Segundo youngsters will present an adaptation of “Into the Woods,” a musical by Stephen Sondheim that was originally staged on Broadway in 1987. The play marks a high point for more than 50 participants in the El Segundo Recreation and Parks Department’s drama classes for youth, which include three productions a year.
“The summer (production) is generally the most spectacular of the year because children have more time for rehearsals,” said Gala Burkholder, El Segundo’s cultural arts supervisor.
In Redondo Beach, 87 South Bay youths will stage a musical version of the 1966 film “King of Hearts” beginning Wednesday. The youngsters, enrolled in the Redondo Beach Drama Camp, learn everything from acting to scenery construction to stand-up comedy.
