N.Y. Times Purchase of Boston Globe OKd: The Justice Department gave the go-ahead to the $1.1-billion purchase, deeming that it will not adversely affect competition. Department spokeswoman Gina Talamona noted that there is no significant overlap in circulation and that advertisers view them as covering separate territories. The deal, announced June 11, guarantees the Globe independence in news and management for at least five years. However, the chief executives of both companies--William O. Taylor of the Globe and Arthur Ochs Sulzberger of the Times--said they might combine some advertising sales and explore high-technology applications for the companies’ news-gathering databases.
