Texas Instruments Inc. to Build Computer Chip Plant: One of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturing plants will be built in Dallas at a cost of $750 million to $1 billion. Jerry Junkins, Texas Instruments’ chairman, president and chief executive, said the demand for TI’s chips is growing faster than the industry’s 20% growth rate, primarily because of a strong market in personal computers and a growing market in telecommunications, as well as a computer industry price war.

The plant, which will eventually employ 750 people, plans to build chips as small as 0.25 microns--or 400 times smaller than the diameter of a single strand of hair.
