SAND DOLLARS: Do you park down a side street because you hate paying the $6 for easy beach parking? In Huntington Beach, city officials are taking steps to encourage you to park at the beach. . . . They’re planning to pepper nearby neighborhoods with 800 parking meters. Reason: Revenue from the beach lots has dropped about 22% this year--lousy weather, plus people are parking down the street to save the $6. Also: the $6 parking fee may become daily; it’s now just on summer weekends and holidays.
SHOOTING WAVES: If local enthusiasts have their way, the city of Huntington Beach will host a Surf Film Festival next summer to help raise money for a new surfing museum (B1). . . . “We want to premiere our own movie, ‘PCH Dreams,’ and we’d like to show Bruce Brown’s sequel to ‘The Endless Summer,’ ” says Don Strout, a Huntington Beach graphic designer. The documentary-style sequel is now under production worldwide, and “PCH Dreams,” a regular feature film, is scheduled for filming in Huntington Beach by early 1994.
HEAD OF SLATE: Quarterbacks usually get the publicity, but when the Rams took the field at the Big A for an exhibition game against San Diego the other night, it was offensive lineman Jackie Slater who got the most thunderous applause. . . . Slater, 6-4, 287 pounds, holds a helmet full of Rams records, such as: Most games as a Ram (238) and most Ram seasons (starting his 18th). Most boos at that Chargers game? For veteran quarterback Jim Everett.
SHINING ON: El Modena High senior Jamie Shine and her brother Casey appear in an FHP health care TV commercial that starts running locally this week. It shows Jamie, a basketball, volleyball and track standout, and Casey, a freshman at Rancho Santiago College, playing basketball together. . . . Jamie overcame a near-fatal case of bacterial meningitis last April under the care of FHP. The Shine family recently spent a week in New York City for part of the filming.
