Pedestrian Killed Crossing Street
ANAHEIM — A 38-year-old Anaheim man died after he was hit by a pickup truck and then by a car as he lay in the street, police said Monday.
Juan Jose Rangel was walking north across Katella Avenue near Easy Way when he was hit by the pickup about 9:10 p.m. Sunday, police said. The driver of the truck, a 40-year-old Anaheim man, was traveling at the 35-m.p.h. speed limit and could not stop in time, Police Sgt. Richard Buchholz said.
That driver pulled to the side of the road after striking Rangel. He ran to a pay phone to call police.
Rangel then was hit by the second vehicle, driven by a 26-year-old Lake Forest woman, police said.
Both drivers waited at the scene for police. Police said that based on their preliminary investigation, neither driver was at fault.
Police said there is no marked crosswalk near the intersection.
