SOUTH-CENTRAL : Election Set for Advisory Committee
Elections will be held Thursday for a 19-member community advisory committee that will recommend commercial redevelopment strategies along the Western Avenue Corridor.
Candidates for the election at Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, 6614 S. Western Ave., must bring proof of residency in the community, such as a tax bill or rent receipt, along with photo identification. Registration begins at 6 p.m., with the election scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
Committee members will work with the Community Redevelopment Agency to develop proposals for attracting businesses to areas affected by last year’s riots.
“Many of the problems we’ll be looking at existed before the riots,†said CRA spokesman Marc Littman. “The riots aggravated existing conditions that have been further hampered by the continued recession. So we’re looking at options to attract businesses.â€
The committee will include two members representing absentee business property owners, two representing residential property owners, four representing community organizations and eight residents. Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas will appoint the remaining three members.
