IRVINE : College Puts Seniors in High-Tech Mode
Instruction in using word processors and spreadsheets is just one reason why an Irvine Valley College computer class for senior citizens is almost always filled.
For some, the class offers a chance to better understand their computer-savvy grandchildren. For others it’s an opportunity to use the latest technology to draw family trees or learn a new hobby.
“These are people who didn’t grow up with computers. They are a little afraid of the technology,” said Cathleen Schamp, who has taught the popular class for three years. “Some of them have inherited computers from their children, and they want to know how to use the things.”
Irvine Valley College will offer two computer classes for senior citizens this fall. One deals with basic computer skills while the other covers spreadsheets and databases.
Schamp said she tries to make the classes accessible and comfortable for students who are not used to dealing with keyboards, hard drives and monitors. The classes go at a slow pace, and students are encouraged to ask questions, she said.
The courses will be held at the Irvine Valley College computer lab, and students will use the college’s terminals.
One of Schamp’s first tasks in class is to make students comfortable about using the equipment.
“They really are afraid of doing something and breaking the computer,” she said. “They are very careful.”
