Weiner, Lin Advance in USTA 18s

Glenn Weiner of Cypress and Eric Lin of Anaheim advanced Wednesday in third-round play at the U.S. Tennis Assn. Boys’ 18 National Championship at Kalamazoo, Mich.

Weiner, seeded first, beat Christian Huff of Winston-Salem, N.C., 6-1, 6-1. Sixth-seeded Lin beat Mitch Sprengelmeyer of Florence, S.C., 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

Jason Appel of Lake Mary, Fla., beat Jakub Pietrowski of Huntington Beach, 6-3, 6-4.

In the third round of the boys’ 16s, Kevin Kim of Fullerton beat Geoff Abrams of Newport Beach, 6-4, 6-4.

Erik Martin, a former Rancho Santiago College and Whittier Christian High basketball standout, was among three local players selected in the Continental Basketball Assn. draft.

Martin, a 6-foot-6 forward who helped Cincinnati advance to the East Regional Championship before losing to North Carolina, was drafted in the second round by Grand Rapids (Mich.).

Corie Blount, who was Martin’s teammate at Rancho Santiago and Cincinnati, was selected by Rapid City (S.D.) in the sixth round.

Blount, a 6-foot-9 forward who averaged 11.3 points and eight rebounds for Cincinnati last season, was selected by the Chicago Bulls as the 25th pick in the NBA draft June 30.

Eric Pauley, a 6-10 center who played at Savanna High, Cypress College and Kansas, was chosen in the sixth round by Ft. Wayne (Ind.).

Johnathon Hewko and Jim Farley each scored four goals to lead San Clemente to a 10-5 victory over DeAnza in the 15-and-under National Junior Olympic water polo tournament at Lynbrook High School in Cupertino. Goalkeeper Sean Spraker had six saves for San Clemente, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

The SoCal Club of Tustin also advanced in 15-and-under play, beating Annapolis, 17-4. Ian Ching scored five goals and Brian Brown scored three. Jeff Moloughney had four goals and David Hay had three in a 13-8 victory over Coronado by the SoCal’s 17-and-under team. The 13-and-under team beat Atwater, 15-0.

Megan Price of Newport Beach leads the Silver division of the International Naples Sabot Assn. Junior Championship after three of six sailing races. Loran Sharp of Corona del Mar was in second and Gray Dougherty of Newport Beach was third.

Jason Moyer of Balboa leads the Iron division and Brian Bissell of Newport Beach and Jeff Droege of Huntington Beach are second and third in the Gold division.
