City Council Clout
Like many legislative bodies, the Los Angeles City Council performs much of its work through committees, and the committee chairmen can wield considerable power, speeding up proposed measures or stalling them.
Historically, the Public Safety, Budget & Finance, and Planing & Land Use Management panels have been the most influential committees.

Laura Chick 3rd District City Hall Office: (213) 485-3436 Reseda Office: (818) 344-3541 or (818) 989-8848 COMMITTEES: Environmental Quality & Waste Management (Chairman); Planning & Land Use Management; Public Safety Goal: “To make our neighborhoods safe again. A big part of that is seeing that the LAPD gets the resources it needs to become the very best police department in the world. It also includes a very serious and in-depth look at our youth. When I talk about public safety, it has to include a preventive component such as youth programs and gang-prevention programs.”

I think that’s the best way I can contribute to improving the quality of life in the City of Los Angeles. I plan to use my committee assignments to improve public works services, to reduce red tape at City Hall and to create jobs by increasing housing and possibly community redevelopment.”

People want to feel safe and want to feel connected to the city. You’re not going to be able to make the neighborhoods safe if people don’t have jobs. On the other hand, you’re not going to get people to locate jobs in neighborhoods that are not safe.”
