LOCAL NOTES : Long Beach to Play Memphis State Feb. 21 at Anaheim Arena

Cal State Long Beach will play Memphis State in the first college basketball game at Anaheim Arena Feb. 21, officials representing Long Beach and the arena announced Tuesday.

The 49ers and Tigers, who both made the NCAA tournament field last season, will play at the 18,200-seat facility in a game that will be televised nationally. The game is scheduled for a 9 p.m. tip-off as part of ESPN’s “Big Monday” coverage.

It will be the second basketball game at Anaheim Arena. The Clippers will play host to an exhibition game against the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 16.

Long Beach won the Big West tournament and finished 22-10 last season. Memphis State, 22-10, finished in second place in the Great Midwest Conference.

Aliso Niguel High hired three coaches, Athletic Director Kurt Westling announced.

Jennifer Thomas will coach girls’ cross-country and track and field, Taz Murtaugh will coach boys’ track and field, and Rich Ruhlen will coach boys’ tennis.

Thomas coached Laguna Hills girls’ cross-country and track and field teams from 1991-93. Thomas, who earned Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. athlete-of-the-year honors in 1987, will teach English and physical education.

Murtaugh coached track and field at Dana Hills from ‘91-93. He also will serve as the football team’s defensive coordinator and teach special education.

Ruhlen coached the Capistrano Valley boys’ junior varsity tennis team last season. He will also coach lower-level boys’ basketball and teach science.

Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza and Tiger Woods of Cypress each split two matches for the West team in the American Junior Golf Assn. Canon Cup at Stanford Golf Course. The East rallied to take a 15 1/2-14 1/2 lead by winning 10 of the 15 matches on the second day of the three-day competition.

Booth teamed with Eddy Lee of Corona to beat Heather Hoffman of Metamora, Ill., and Ryan Armour of Silver Lake, Ohio, 2 and 1. Booth and Heather Graff of Kennewick, Wash., lost, 4 and 3, to Lisa Penske of Bethlehem, Pa., and Elizabeth Bauer of Pinellas Park, Fla.

With Kelli Kuehne of McKinney, Tex., Woods beat Wendi Patterson of Atlanta and Mark Wilson of Menomonee Falls, Wis., 2 and 1. Woods and Michael Walton of Palm Desert lost to Robert Floyd of Miami Beach and Michael Henderson of Raleigh, N.C., 2 and 1.

Alicia Allison of Santa Ana and Skyli Yamada of Sandy, Utah, lost to Cristie Kerr of Miami and Shauna Estes of Orangebrug, S.C., 3 and 2.

Cheryl Burke and Eunice Choi, both of Dove Canyon, advanced to the first round of match play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur in Chula Vista.

Burke shot 78 to give her a two-day total of 158 at San Diego Country Club. Choi shot 78 for a 159 total.

Danny Hoppie had three hits, scored three times and stole two bases, and Daniel Keller had two hits, two runs batted in and scored twice to lead Fountain Valley to a 14-4 victory over St. Louis in the Colt World Series in Lafayette, Ind. The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

It was the opening game of round-robin play in the tournament for 15- and 16-year olds. Fountain Valley next plays defending champions Hoosier North of Indiana Thursday.

Paul Grumet of Tustin pitched a five-inning no-hitter and Joe Ammirato of Tustin hit two three-run home runs to lead the second-seeded Southern California Yankees to a 21-0 victory over Willmar, Minn., in the AAU Junior Olympics baseball tournament in Burnsville, Minn.
