Indian Troops Fire on Muslim Protesters

Associated Press

Soldiers fired bullets and tear gas to disperse hundreds of Muslim protesters who blocked the city’s streets after Friday prayers.

Defying a five-day curfew, thousands of Kashmiris gathered at several mosques and later swarmed the streets shouting “God is great!” and “We want independence!”

The curfew was imposed Sunday after a family was killed. Witnesses said an Indian border guard killed a couple and their 8-year-old son.

During Friday’s protests, Indian troops dispersed more than 1,000 people, including women and children, who had blocked a bridge. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
