LOS ANGELES : Council Urged to End Freeze on Hiring Police Recruits
- Share via
Alarmed by the toll that attrition is taking on the Los Angeles Police Department, a City Council member is moving to unfreeze recruit hiring.
Although the LAPD is authorized for 7,900 officers, the force has only 7,600, and the number is dropping.
“The City Council must act now to unfreeze all recruit classes scheduled between Oct. 1, 1993, and June 30, 1994, to reach the department’s authorized strength of 7,900,” according to a motion by Councilman Mike Hernandez.
Money is already budgeted to pay for new officers up to the authorized level of 7,900, but the city’s freeze on hiring prevents them from being employed without a special motion by the council.
