NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Incaviglia’s Homers Blast Pirates, 10-2
Pete Incaviglia hit two home runs, one a three-run shot, as the Phillies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 10-2, Saturday night at Philadelphia.
Danny Jackson (9-8) gave up nine hits, struck out four and walked three in his second complete game of the season. Pittsburgh starter Randy Tomlin (3-8) gave up five runs, four earned, and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Lenny Dykstra of the Phillies had two doubles among three hits and scored one run, increasing his major league-leading total to 97.
The Phillies led, 5-2, when they scored five runs against reliever Dave Otto in the fifth. Dave Hollins and Darren Daulton singled and Incaviglia followed with his second home run of the game and 15th of the season, a 408-foot drive into the upper deck in left field.
“I try to hit the ball as hard as I can every at-bat,” Incaviglia said. “That’s the way I can contribute to the club.
“I’ve been struggling a little bit lately so it’s nice to get into the swing of things.”
Cincinnati 6, San Diego 3--Jose Rijo homered and scattered four hits over eight innings to overcome another poor defensive game by the Reds at Cincinnati.
The Reds made two more errors--giving them six in two days--to let in two unearned runs. But Rijo (9-5) withstood it by giving up only one earned run as the Reds won for only the second time in seven games while handing the Padres their seventh loss in 10.
St. Louis 4, New York 3--Bernard Gilkey drove in three runs with a homer and two singles to lead the Cardinals at St. Louis.
The start of the game was delayed 2 hours 16 minutes because of rain.
It didn’t bother Gilkey, who led off the first inning with his 10th home run. It was the second leadoff home run this week for Gilkey.
The home run ended a streak of 17 scoreless innings for Met starter Eric Hillman (1-5). Hillman gave up four runs and 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Rene Arocha (8-3) struck out five and gave up two runs on seven hits in seven-plus innings. Lee Smith pitched the ninth to earn his major league-leading 36th save.
San Francisco 4, Colorado 3--Right-hander Bill Swift helped his cause with a two-run double to lead the Giants at Denver before the largest crowd for a night game in National League history--72,208.
The crowd eclipsed the Rockies’ own record of 71,784 set last Saturday against St. Louis.
Matt Williams led off the San Francisco seventh with his 24th homer, the first of six hits in the inning as the Giants scored four times.
Swift, tying teammate John Burkett for the most victories in the league at 15, won his fifth in a row. Swift, who left the game when he experienced a cramp in his left hip while warming up in the seventh, gave up five hits in six innings, striking out seven with no walks.
Atlanta 4, Houston 3--The Braves’ Greg Maddux outpitched Darryl Kile, extending his mastery over the Astros as the Braves continued their torrid road trip at Houston.
The Braves have won eight of 10 games on the trip and 10 of 12 since Fred McGriff--who homered along with Ron Gant--joined them after a trade from San Diego. McGriff also doubled in a two-for-four performance.
Montreal 6, Florida 5--Lou Frazier’s pinch-single with two out in the ninth inning scored Marquis Grissom with the winning run at Montreal.
Grissom opened the ninth with a single against Matt Turner (1-3) and moved to second on Larry Walker’s foul out to deep left field. After a walk, Grissom advanced to third on a fielder’s choice, setting up Frazier’s line single to left field.
John Wetteland (7-1) blew a save for starter Dennis Martinez for the fourth time this season when he gave up the tying run to score in the top of the ninth.
