The wounded honor of a spurned suitor touched off a clan battle in which 108 people were killed in western Sudan this month, the government said Friday.

Army troops were sent to the area to separate and disarm the two clans, Interior Minister Brigadier Abdel-Rahim Mohammed Hussein told the government-owned newspaper Al Ingaz al Watani.

He said the dispute began when a man from one clan sought a bride from the other and was rejected.

It led to a battle in which 56 members of the Awlad Omran clan were killed and 23 wounded and the Awlad Zuid suffered 52 dead and 27 wounded.
