San Diego Charger cornerback Gill Byrd might have intercepted his last pass. Byrd, 32, who will miss this season after undergoing reconstructive surgery on his left knee, said he is prepared to retire.
“I’m going to rehab as if I’m going to try to come back, but I don’t know yet,” Byrd said from home in a conference call with reporters. “The burning question now that my wife and I have to ask . . . is why come back? What do we have to prove? . . .”

The Atlanta Falcons agreed to a three-year contract with offensive tackle Lincoln Kennedy, their first-round draft pick from Washington. . . . The Houston Oilers also agreed to terms with their first-round pick, offensive lineman Brad Hopkins. . . . A suspect sought in the June 18 stabbing of New England Patriots Leonard Russell and Tim Edwards in a brawl at a bar turned himself in and was arraigned in Boston. John Tibbs Jr., 21, of Boston, pleaded innocent to two counts of assault with intent to murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
