DOWNTOWN : AFL-CIO’s Asian Alliance to Meet
The AFL-CIO’s Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance has scheduled its biennial convention next month Downtown at the Los Angeles Hilton and Towers.
About 500 Asian-American union members from all over the country are expected to attend the Aug. 19-22 convention, which will help tourism here, said Art Takei, a vice president of the alliance’s Los Angeles chapter.
Takei said two of the key issues to be discussed will be the needs of immigrant workers and the inclusion of more immigrants in the union.
The alliance, which aims to unite Asian-American workers, originated in Los Angeles in 1987, when local union members formed the Alliance of Asian Pacific Labor. Eventually, it persuaded the AFL-CIO to establish a nationwide Asian-American organization. The new Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance had its first convention in Washington last year.
