Huntington Park : Street-Light Assessment Goes Up Despite Protests

Despite protests from a dozen residents, the Huntington Park City Council agreed Monday night to increase the city Street Lighting Assessment District tax.
The tax will vary depending on where the property is and whether it is commercial, residential or industrial, said City Manager Donald L. Jeffers.
The average residential property owner will pay about $18 a year more, Jeffers said. The current rate is about $150. Commercial property owners will pay more, he said.
The tax increase will generate $1.2 million for street lighting, street and park maintenance and tree trimming. It also will provide $70,000 to build new restrooms at Salt Lake Park, Jeffers said.
Mayor Ric Loya and Councilman Raul R. Perez voted against the tax increase, preferring to remove the restroom project. Without the project, they argued, the tax would increase by an average of $8 per property owner.
The tax increase comes on the heels of a 3% utility users tax that was approved by the council last year.
