A mysterious explosion startled a residential neighborhood, leaving a two-inch-deep hole in front of one car and a small puncture in another vehicle, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday.

Neighbors in the 10500 block of Lowden Street called authorities at 11:56 p.m. Monday to report hearing a blast, Sheriff’s Lt. Dick Olson said.

When deputies arrived, they found a hole in the ground in front of a van, he said. The van was not damaged, but a car parked nearby had a small hole in its door.

Investigators do not know what kind of device caused the explosion nor the motive for it, and the vehicle owners “could think of no reason for anyone wanting to damage their property,†Olson said.

No one was injured.
