LOCAL NOTES : Mission Viejo’s Bartelt Advances

Page Bartelt of Mission Viejo defeated San Diego’s Susan Hawke, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round of the Mazda Tennis Classic Opportunity Tournament at Beverly Hills Tennis Club. Laguna Niguel’s Erin Bornstedt lost to Claremont’s Laxmi Pouri, 6-4, 6-2.

The winner of the event earns a wild-card entry into the classic’s qualifying tournament at La Costa, July 31 and Aug. 1.

Brad Fichtel, the Rams’ seventh-round draft choice from Eastern Illinois, has signed. Fichtel, a 6-foot-2, 285-pound center, is the second Ram draft choice to come to terms. Sean LaChapelle, a wide receiver from UCLA, signed last month.

Tom Tereschuk had been named baseball coach at Servite High, principal Raymond Dunne has announced. Tereschuk, 32, comes to Servite from Whittier California High, where he had a 85-56-2 record in eight years. Tereschuk also will teach English at Servite.

Santa Margarita graduate Adam Dzierzynski, a 6-foot-1 point guard, said he has agreed to play basketball at Chapman University next season. Dzierzynski averaged 10 points, three rebounds and 9.2 assists and had a 53.4 field-goal and 71.9 free-throw percentages his senior season.

Evan Alexander, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter from Capistrano Valley High, signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at UC Irvine, Anteater Coach Andy Read said. Alexander earned second-team all-Southern Section and first-team all-South Coast League honors.
