LOS ANGELES : Fines for Graffiti Vandals Win Tentative Council OK
Fines of up to $1,000 for those caught defacing property with graffiti won preliminary approval from the Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday.
The ordinance adds civil penalties to the already existing criminal prohibitions against graffiti vandalism. Fines collected from violators will be used to fund the graffiti reward program and other graffiti abatement programs.
“Graffiti is everywhere,†said Councilman Hal Bernson, who proposed the measure. “It’s completely out of control. It’s time we let the taggers and vandals know we mean business.â€
