A California Highway Patrol officer accused of breaking the jaw of a San Francisco police officer during a law enforcement soccer tournament last week was charged with felony battery Monday.

Officer Ignacio Quezado Garnica, 41, is accused of breaking Michael Cleary’s jaw during the soccer game at Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday. Garnica allegedly hit Cleary, 34, after the face-off between his CHP team and a team from the San Francisco Police Department, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Richard Jenkins.

Arrangements are being made for Garnica, who is assigned to the San Diego area, to surrender for arraignment, but no court date has been scheduled, Jenkins said.
