BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : All-Stars: Langston or Finley or Both?
Angel Manager Buck Rodgers probably will get the phone call within the next 10 days, and his answer could determine how pitchers Mark Langston and Chuck Finley spend the All-Star break.
Toronto Manager Cito Gaston is expected to call Rodgers before July 8, when the reserves and pitchers will be chosen for the All-Star game, and ask which is most deserving to be on the team: Langston or Finley.
Langston (9-2, 2.50 earned-run average, with more strikeouts) probably would be the choice if a decision had to be made today. It doesn’t help the case for Finley (9-5, 2.69 ERA, with more complete games) that he is scheduled to pitch the day before the All-Star break, and Langston is scheduled for Friday, July 9. The American League could choose Langston, simply because he’s more rested.
“I want to make this as fair as possible, so I’ll go either way the league asks,” Rodgers said. “If Finley is their choice, I’ll work it so he doesn’t start Sunday, if that’s what they want.
“It won’t help our team if Finley doesn’t go Sunday, but to me, it’s more important to be picked for the All-Star game. That’s a great honor, and I would never want to take that away from him.”

Angel reliever Joe Grahe, who has been on the disabled list since June 5, probably will be sent to triple-A Vancouver on a rehabilitative assignment within a week. Grahe has been bothered by rotator cuff tendinitis. . . . Rodgers, remembering the life of Dodger Hall of Famer Roy Campanella: “Either he was a good actor or he loved the life he had left.” . . . Twins designated hitter Dave Winfield, 41, who is in the second-worst home run drought of his career, has begun to draw criticism from the team’s organization for his work habits. Trainer Dick Martin told local reporters: “We had about two days of 75% cooperation, then a few with about 5-10% cooperation. He’s doing what he allows time to do.” Winfield, who has a weak left shoulder, has gone 30 games without a homer, his longest drought since Aug. 11, 1976-April 24, 1977, when he went 34 games.
