In your story “A Step-by-Step Encounter With the Cotswolds” (June 13), you listed several companies that offer walking tours in Great Britain. To this list you must add: Country Walking Holidays, 1122 Fir Ave., Blaine, Wash. 98230, (604) 921-8304.

Six years I have walked with Doug Caldow, head of Country Walking Holidays--in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales--and these were the best vacation experiences I can imagine. They also offer walks in Hawaii and in the Pacific Northwest.

What a kick to find ourselves in the Travel section. My husband and I were part of the group that trekked through the English Cotswolds last year with Robert Tolles, the author of the story. As soon as he mentioned the drenching rains, we knew it was our hike. We shared his enjoyment of the tour and disappointment in the weather. But in retrospect, even walking in the rain had its moments. The shared experience of soggy boots and water trickling down our faces led to a special camaraderie in the group. And our bedraggled appearance broke the ice with the locals at the midday pub stop.PHYLLIS KOON

It was a joy to read your section on England (“Pleasures and Treasures of England,” June 13). But did you really think you could slip one past the multitude of Anglophiles who must have devoured the issue? In the article on Woodstock, the author should know that King Henry II could not have resided there in 1279. He died in 1189.

The sentence in question should have indicated that in 1279, a survey of local events noted Henry II’s frequent visits to Woodstock during the previous century. We regret the error.
