Three in Shaw Family Killed

The parents and sister of Miami Heat guard Brian Shaw were killed and an infant girl injured in an auto accident early Saturday near Las Vegas, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

Charles Shaw, 52, apparently fell asleep at the wheel of the family’s Jeep at about 5:15 a.m. on Interstate 15 about nine miles south of the city limits.

Charles Shaw, his wife, Barbara, 51, and daughter Monica, 24, all were ejected from the vehicle. The women were pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. Charles Shaw was airlifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, where he died from his injuries about an hour later.

An infant girl, Brianna, whose relationship to the Shaw family was not immediately clear, was riding in a child restraint seat and survived. She was hospitalized in good condition.

The family, from Richmond, Calif., apparently was traveling to visit Brian Shaw, who has a home in the Las Vegas area.

Brian Shaw was a first-round draft pick of the Boston Celtics out of UC Santa Barbara in 1988 and spent two seasons with Boston before being traded to Miami midway through the 1991-92 season. His 7.3 scoring average last season was his lowest in four NBA seasons.

Bill Elliott scored his first Busch Grand National victory, dominating the Fay’s 150 at Watkins Glen, N.Y. Elliott, driving a Ford, averaged 89.970 m.p.h. and finished 2.81 seconds ahead of Terry Labonte in a Chevrolet.

Nigel Mansell earned the pole for today’s Budweiser G.I. Joe’s 200 at Portland, Ore.

Scott Kalitta, in top fuel; John Force, in funny car, and Warren Johnson, in pro stock, are the leaders heading into today’s finals of the Western Auto Nationals drag racing event at Topeka, Kan.

Miss Budweiser raced to a world hydroplane record as Chip Hanauer reached a top average speed of 165.975 m.p.h. near Evansville, Ind.

Pro Basketball

An estimated 175,000 fans jammed Phoenix’s downtown area to salute the Suns, who posted the NBA’s best record this season but lost to the Chicago Bulls in the finals. . . . Golden State Warrior center Billy Owens is expected to undergo arthroscopic surgery Monday to repair torn cartilage in his right knee.

Soccer

Colombia eliminated Uruguay on penalty kicks and Ecuador beat Paraguay, 3-0, to move into the America Soccer Cup semifinals at Quito, Ecuador. Colombia will meet the winner of today’s game between Argentina and Brazil and Ecuador will face the winner of the Peru-Mexico match.

A French soccer player, Christophe Robert of the Valenciennes club, was charged with taking a $45,000 bribe to “go easy” on Olympique Marseille in a French League match on May 23. Robert went out 23 minutes into the match, saying he had a knee injury. Valenciennes lost, 1-0.
