Lilly Picks AT&T; Exec as CEO: The Indianapolis-based company’s choice of Randall L. Tobias, 51, as its new chairman, president and chief executive is apparently aimed at speeding up the pace of change at the aging drug maker. Tobias replaces Vaughn D. Bryson, 54, who became president and CEO just 19 months ago. The company said Bryson’s decision to retire was prompted by differences with its board over “management philosophy.” Tobias, American Telephone & Telegraph Co.’s vice chairman and chairman of AT&T; International, has been an outside director of Eli Lilly & Co. since 1986. He also replaces Richard D. Wood, 66, as chairman. Lilly’s drug products have been under increased pricing pressure from generic brands and large buyers such as HMOs.
