Davenport Is Double Winner at Wimbledon
Lindsay Davenport, a 17-year-old former Chadwick High student, was victorious Thursday in singles and doubles at Wimbledon.
Davenport defeated Barbara Rittner of Germany, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5), in her second-round singles match and teamed with Chanda Rubin, 17, of Lafayette, La., for a 6-4, 6-3 win over Heidi Sprung of Austria and Danielle Thomas of Australia in a first-round doubles match.
Davenport will play 16th-seeded Nathalie Tauziat of France on Saturday. The unseeded Davenport is 28th on the Virginia Slims rankings.
Kimberly Po of Rolling Hills and Rikard Bergh of Sweden teamed for a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Steve DeVries of Suisun, Calif., and Patty Fendick of Sacramento in a first-round mixed doubles match.
Cammy MacGregor, a 1987 Palos Verdes High graduate, and Trevor Kronemann, a former UC Irvine standout, were defeated by Martina Navratilova and Mark Woodforde, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7), in a mixed doubles match.
Jim Pugh of Rancho Palos Verdes and Brent Haygarth of South Africa trailed 10th-seeded Wayne Ferreira of South Africa and Michael Stich of Germany, 6-7 (7-4), 6-2, 6-2, 3-3, in a second-round men’s doubles match suspended by darkness. Stich, the 1991 Wimbledon singles champion, teamed with John McEnroe to win the 1992 doubles title.
Pete Sampras, a former Palos Verdes High standout who is seeded first in men’s singles, will play former USC player Byron Black of Zimbabwe today in a third-round match. Black is ranked 108th in singles.
