La Canada High School was chosen as a “Blue Ribbon School†by the U.S. Department of Education.

As part of the recognition--260 other schools in the country are also being honored--Principal James E. Stratton, a counselor and a student will travel to Washington in September to receive an official plaque and a “Blue Ribbon†flag from President Clinton.

Stratton said “Blue Ribbon†schools are singled out for excellence in fostering teachers, for high quality of curriculum, effective teaching methods, parent and community support, and strong science and math programs.

La Canada High, a school with 1,630 seventh- to 12th-graders, began its lengthy application for the designation in September and was reviewed at the school in April by a federal panel. The school received notice of its selection late last month.

Upon hearing the news, the school ordered professionally done “Blue Ribbon†badges for all students to wear, Stratton said, adding that the recognition “does two important things: It validates not only what we have done but where we are going.â€
