CANOGA PARK : Neighbors Still at Odds With Recycler
Six weeks after the city Board of Zoning Appeals gave a controversial recycling center in Canoga Park a last chance to clean up and quiet down, Universal Recycling has drawn up a compromise plan to keep the center in business.
But a group of neighbors, who tried to get the city to close the center in May, say they are not appeased.
Threatened with closure, and under attack from neighbors who view the business as a nuisance, owners of the center at 20934 Sherman Way have scaled back, cleaned up debris and offered to refrain from dumping glass into bins except for half an hour in the evening, said Michael Sausser, consultant for Universal.
But Arthur Sweet, a tenant in a neighboring office building, said that Universal should find a new home. He said odors, rodents and the sound of crashing glass have spoiled working conditions in his building.
“It’s just the wrong use for that property, “ Sweet said Tuesday, one day after meeting with Universal’s owners. “Now the facility looks better, but that doesn’t make it right.”
The zoning board will make a final decision at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in room 561-A, City Hall, 200 N. Spring St.
