SEAL BEACH : Music to Continue at Restaurant
The Seal Beach Planning Commission has extended an unusual entertainment license for a popular Main Street eatery.
The license, originally approved in January, allows Papillion’s to have a single performer sing and play one non-amplified instrument--such as a piano, harp, guitar or violin. Barred, however, was anything electric or loud. Group sing-alongs were also banned.
Last week, the commission was asked to modify the permit to allow amplification of the performer’s voice. The commission decided that using a microphone is acceptable.
The owner of Papillion’s told the panel that without amplification, entertainers had trouble being heard above the din of the piano and the restaurant.
“The instrument overpowers his voice,†owner Nader Tahvilidari said, asking that a microphone be allowed.
When Tahvilidari first sought to provide live music at the restaurant, some residents opposed the idea, fearing it would cause too much noise and be “inappropriate†for the area.
But since the City Council approved the temporary entertainment license six months ago, neither the city nor Tahvilidari has received any complaints.
