Calkins Claims Titles in 2 Events
Thousand Oaks High senior Valery Calkins, swimming for Conejo Simi Aquatics, finished first in the 200- and 500-meter freestyle events at Saturday’s Bank One/National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Assn. National Swimming and Diving Invitational in Indianapolis.
Calkins, who was the Southern Section champion in both events this year, was timed in 1:49.90 for the 200 freestyle and a 1993-best 4:49.52 in the 500 freestyle.
Calkins will attend South Carolina in September on a four-year scholarship.
