Maybe This Is Why Meet Was Rescheduled
Congratulations to the CIF officials for their knee-jerk reaction in canceling the State track meet. Gentlemen, you have deprived all but the very elite among those kids of participating in the most prestigious meet of their lives. I’ll bet that given similar weather and a state-of-the-art track such as Cerritos, the meet would have gone as scheduled in any other state.

Inept, idiotic and buffoonish are just a few of the adjectives that come to mind to describe the CIF bureaucrats who canceled the State track finals. Perhaps those involved in the decision were fearful of possible injuries and lawsuits. Had this group used some common sense and simply delayed the meet for about two hours, they would have noticed that the facility was safe, the rain had passed and the competition could have been conducted without danger.

Congratulations to those responsible for the decision to cancel the State track meet.
As I was standing outside the locked, all-weather facility at Cerritos College late Saturday afternoon, in balmy weather under nearly cloudless skies, talking to many of the shocked and depressed athletes, parents, coaches and fans, I was thinking the message to young people has once again come through loud and clear:
Do not trust adults!

Editor’s Note: After pressure from several sources, led by a proposal from the Central Coast Section, the CIF reconsidered its decision and on Thursday announced the State meet has been rescheduled for June 19.
