LOCAL NOTES : Titan Shortstop DeWalt Honored

Cal State Fullerton shortstop Denise DeWalt was named to the Academic All-America softball team, it was announced Thursday.

DeWalt, a physical education major who hit .418 and has a 3.44 grade-point average, was the only first-team selection from a school west of the Rockies.

UCLA utility player Jennifer Brundage, formerly of Irvine High, earned third-team honors.

Esperanza High volleyball players Paul Nihipali and Chris Pitzak will play in the U.S. Olympic Festival in San Antonio in July. Pitzak, a 6-foot-3 setter, has signed with BYU. Nihipali, a 6-7 middle blocker, will attend UCLA.
