BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Angels Relieve Problems by Committee

Although the Angels believe that reliever Joe Grahe is healthy, Manager Buck Rodgers said they will continue to use a stopper-by-committee with Gene Nelson and Steve Frey.

“Ultimately, you’d like to have a one-two punch,” Rodgers said, “but we don’t have a bona fide closer. We have a bona fide committee out there. That’s not a slam at Joe Grahe or anyone else, but to expect Joe to go out there and have him be that guy right now is presumptuous.”

The Angels, with four pitchers with at least two saves, have 16 saves, tied with Toronto for most in the American League.

Angel starter Julio Valera said he collected another $2,500 bonus Tuesday when he passed his body-fat test. Valera, who checked in at less than 18%, has received $5,000 in bonuses. His next test is scheduled for July 1.
