GOLF ROUNDUP : Allem Holds Off Norman to Win Colonial by One
Fulton Allem birdied two of the last three holes, then hung on for a one-shot victory over Greg Norman in the Colonial Invitational on Sunday at Ft. Worth.
Allem, a South African, won for the second time in his seven seasons on the PGA Tour with a closing 67 and a tournament-record 264 total. The victory was worth $234,000 from the purse of $1.3 million.
Norman kept the pressure on to the end with a 68. The Australian made a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole, then Allem, needing a five-foot putt for par to avoid a playoff, barely got it in the right lip.
Allem had a break on the ninth hole, where his approach hit the rock wall in front of the green. Instead of bouncing back into a pond, the ball caromed into the gallery. Allem got it up and down, making a a 20-foot putt for par.
Jeff Maggert’s birdie on the final hole finished off a 66 and lifted him into third alone at 267.
