El Monte : Social Services Computer
An El Monte-based social services agency has installed a $293,000 computer system to handle telephone inquiries from residents on how to get emergency food, shelter, day care and other services.
Information and Referral Federation of Los Angeles County, known as INFO LINE, paid for the system with grants from IBM and the Ahmanson Foundation. INFO LINE, the country’s largest information and referral service, handled 215,273 requests last year.
The new computer system, which was unveiled last week, will allow the service to handle more calls and answer questions more quickly. Also, information specialists will no longer have to use microfiche to access resources.
INFO LINE provides confidential information and referrals 24 hours a day, seven days a week at (800) 660-4026. The nonprofit organization gets most of its funding from the county Department of Social Services and United Way of Greater Los Angeles.
