Jazz Film Program Slated for June 11
Playboy’s ninth annual jazz film retrospective will be presented June 11 at 8 p.m. at the Center Green Theater, Pacific Design Center, 8687 Melrose, West Hollywood. It is traditionally held the Friday night preceding the Saturday and Sunday jazz concerts at the Hollywood Bowl.
Among the many artists featured will be swing era veterans Joe Venuti, Benny Goodman, Don Byas, Stephane Grappelli and Ben Webster; jazz harpists Corky Hale and Adele Girard; pianists Marian McPartland; blues giant T. Bone Walker and guitar wizard Les Paul; and modernists Gerry Mulligan, Art Pepper and Zoot Sims.
The program, which promises some surprise footage, will be highlighted with what is believed to be Bix Beiderbecke’s only appearance in a sound film.
Hosted by jazz film archivist Mark Cantor, the program is co-sponsored by Playboy Enterprises and the American Film Institute. Admission is free. Information: (818) 348-2705.
