Car Numbers

I would like to respond to your article on “ghost cars” (May 19).
Since the old VIN (vehicle identification number) is of such importance to the would-be car thief, it should be removed once the insurance company deems the car “totaled,” and sent to the Department of Motor Vehicles to be destroyed and documented. A simple law mandating responsibility to the insurance company would go a long way in eliminating ways to resell a stolen car.
