VALLEYWIDE : Coalition Honors 2 Adults, 2 Students
Two adult volunteers and two students from the Valley have been recognized by a coalition of school administrators for their contributions to their schools and communities.
The Valley honorees were among six students and six adult volunteers in the Los Angeles Unified School District chosen by the Associated Administrators of Los Angeles, a union representing about 1,700 LAUSD administrators.
“We’re honoring people outside of our educational family who have given service to our students and the community,” said Mona Kantor, the union’s activities coordinator. All 12 will be honored during a banquet Thursday night, she added.
The two students recognized for achievement and community service are Ralph Walker from Van Nuys High School and Andrei H. Cerny at North Hollywood High School Gifted Magnet. Both students are seniors and will receive $500 scholarships pending their enrollment in college.
Kantor described Walker as an outstanding athlete and Cerny as a politically active student with leadership aspirations.
Robert Katzman, 38, a volunteer at Burbank Boulevard Elementary School in North Hollywood, and Marianne Hudz, 39, chair of the community advisory council at Reseda High School, were both recognized for outstanding volunteer service for pupils attending schools in the LAUSD.
Kantor said Hudz was instrumental in helping students and the community cope with the Feb. 22 shooting death of Michael Shean Ensley on campus. Katzman, a kidney and pancreas transplant recipient, has organized student activities at Burbank Boulevard school from language arts to a school newspaper.
