HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS : Hughes Leads Royal Sweep
Jason Hughes had a match-high 15 kills to lead the Royal High boys’ volleyball team to a 15-3, 15-6, 15-13 victory over Canyon in a Southern Section Division II quarterfinal match Friday night at Canyon.
Royal improved to 19-0. Canyon finished 19-3.
Joe Penrod added eight kills and Josh Penrod had seven for Royal. Brentt Phillips had a team-high 11 kills for Canyon.
Royal advances to the semifinals next Wednesday at a site to be determined.
In other Southern Section quarterfinal matches:
Whittier Christian d. L.A. Baptist 15-9, 15-7, 15-9--Nick Branson had seven kills and Shawn Farrell added 12 assists for visiting L.A. Baptist (12-5) against the two-time Division III defending champion Heralds (16-0).
Mira Costa d. Harvard-Westlake, 15-13, 15-12, 15-7--Second-seeded Mira Costa breezed in a Division I match at home.
St. John Bosco d. Village Christian 16-14, 15-3, 15-8--St. John Bosco, the Del Rey League champion and the second-seeded team in Division II, won easily at home.
