BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Worrell to Pitch in Bakersfield Sunday

Todd Worrell, who has not pitched in a game since April 7, will pitch an inning in a Class-A game in Bakersfield on Sunday. The Dodgers then have 30 days to activate him, but Worrell says he thinks he is close to returning.

“I’m far enough along to get guys out,” said Worrell, who has been sidelined because of a sprained forearm muscle. “I’m throwing hard and will need more than one inning, but I don’t know how many more than that I will need.”

After making seven errors in his first 28 games, third baseman Tim Wallach has made no errors in the last 11 games.

“I’m starting to pick it up now and play more aggressively,” Wallach said. During the recent three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds, the Dodger defense as a whole played well.

Jose Offerman, who has made nine errors this season, has not made an error in the last seven games, matching his longest streak of the season. Cory Snyder, who has made 13 starts in May in right field, has also made some impressive plays. “Cory’s arm is what he was known for in the past,” Wallach said. “He can throw it.”

Snyder says he has always taken pride in his defense. “It’s just as important to me to dive for a ball or throw a runner out as it is to hit a home run,” Snyder said.

Eric Davis is still working with Reggie Smith and Manager Tom Lasorda still isn’t starting the outfielder. Davis has started only seven of the last nine games. Lasorda said he wants to give Davis the time to focus on his mechanics besides the fact that Davis has already put in a full day of work before the game starts. “It’s not like he is just taking batting practice,” Lasorda said. “He’s works intensely all day with Reggie in the cage.”
