HUNTINGTON BEACH : 120-Mile Beach Run to Finance Memorial
It’s about 120 miles, via the beaches, from the Mexican border to Huntington Beach.
And that 120 miles of strand will be the venue, starting Sunday, for a seven-day fund-raising event. Twelve Southern California lifeguards will run--and occasionally swim--on a northward journey from Tijuana to Huntington Beach.
The money is being raised for a proposed memorial in Huntington Beach for Vincent G. Moorhouse, a former chief lifeguard and city director of community services. Moorhouse, 60, died last year.
The lifeguards participating in the seven-day run and swim said they also hope to raise money for the Huntington Beach Surf Life Saving Assn.
“We’re soliciting donations by the number of miles or just flat-amount donations--whatever anyone wants to give,†said Kai Weisser, a Huntington Beach lifeguard who is coordinating the event.
Weisser said the 120-mile course is rugged and demanding in many areas. “There are some places where we’ll have to crawl over rocks and cliffs, and some places where all you can do is jump into the water and swim around it,†Weisser said.
The 12 lifeguards plan to complete their odyssey at 3:15 p.m. May 29 at the Huntington Beach Pier.
