Simi Valley’s Treadway to Play With Injury

Senior right-hander Bill Treadway of Simi Valley High will be reduced to limited duty for the Southern Section baseball playoffs because of a strained right shoulder muscle.

Treadway, who is 7-0 with a 2.40 earned-run average and 40 strikeouts in 43 2/3 innings, injured the shoulder last week against Channel Islands.

“I’m going to try to keep on pitching,” Treadway said. “I can still pitch short relief, two or three innings at a time. It’s up to me. The doctor didn’t recommend it, but I don’t want to let my team down at this point of the season.”

Treadway, 24-5 in four varsity seasons, is the Pioneers’ all-time leader in victories. However, this season, Treadway has played the role of No. 3 pitcher behind senior right-hander Trevor Leppard (7-1) and junior right-hander Bill Scheffels (9-1).

Cal State Northridge Coach Bill Kernen received letters of intent from Fresno City College shortstop Chad Thornhill and pitcher Rick Orr of Cypress College.

Thornhill was recruited primarily for his defense. “He’s a good athlete and he can really play shortstop,” Kernen said.

Thornhill said he chose Northridge over Nevada Las Vegas, Arizona State and Pacific for several reaons.

“I like the location, it’s a good program, and it had a lot to do with Bill Kernen and what he does for players,” Thornhill said. “I liked the intensity the players showed when I saw their game against Hawaii.”

Thornhill batted .331 and had a .909 fielding percentage with 18 errors.

Orr, a right-hander, is known for his knuckle-curve.

“When it is right on, it is unhittable,” Kernen said.

‘He’s a guy I feel can get a lot better.”

Earlier, Kernen signed first baseman Andy Shaw, a left-handed power hitter from College of the Canyons, catcher-outfielder Josh Smaler from Pierce College, catcher Brett Callan from San Diego Mesa College, and shortstop-pitcher Brian Vasey of Moorpark College.

Kernen plans to sign one more junior college pitcher and a high school pitcher.

He also hopes to attract a few walk-on pitchers.
