GAS HEATER? The cavernous Department One at the courthouse in Santa Ana was packed Wednesday for Superior Court Judge Donald A. McCartin’s retirement party. His courtroom staff presented him with a framed picture of the gas chamber, and the nine men he’s sentenced still on Death Row--more than any other judge in the county. Top picture was serial killer Randy Kraft. . . . McCartin told the crowd: “When I’m fishing at Bass Lake, I’ll take this with me to keep me warm at night.”
